A special room is the elegant copper-and-glass sunroom that is perfect for dining amongst the estate’s lush landscaping – a great place for an owner’s orchid collection or to retreat during a rainstorm. Though Fields was, by far, the most eccentric resident, the home has attracted many other important residents, including Maurice Chevalier and Lily Tomlin. A few years prior to the house being built, the land was sold in a fierce auction with William Randolph Hearst losing out to the ultimate buyer. The house is in move-in condition, with rooms that benefit from sunlight and outdoor views.

The broad outlines of the structure, including large porches on the north and south sides, measure 19' deep by 72' wide. There are eight rooms on the first floor and three finished rooms (with three others evidently finished in the late 19th century) on the second story. The home was dramatically altered over the years, especially when it was used for military school classrooms from 1930 to 1935. It was later used as a residence and then office and nurses' quarters for El Encanto sanitarium from 1940 to 1963.

The walls running east to west are clad in Hardipanel and the walls north to south in wood creating a strong visually dynamic play of form and color. The Hardipanel walls (blue) run from exterior to interior, creating a series of thresholds that demarcate the public and private realms of the house. This cladding approach is a strategy that has worked well for the architects for projects located in the Charlottesville, VA region. The Hardipanel cladding is low maintenance and not subject to mould – a common problem with the humidity typical of the mid-Atlantic region. County at 56,500 square feet, or more than an acre of living space. The number has since been trumped by multiple spec mansions, including one in Bel-Air that clocks in at 105,000 square feet.

Mill Pond House
At $165 million, it’s currently the third-priciest home on the market in L.A. The limestone-clad mansion expands to multiple terraces, which overlook rolling lawns complete with rose gardens, citrus orchards, statues, fountains and koi ponds. In 2019, the Manor pushed Southern California’s luxury real estate market to new heights when it sold for $119.75 million. The park has been used as a filming location for numerous television and film productions, including the hitchhiking scene in the 1934 film It Happened One Night and for the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show. The home’s grounds are rumored to have been designed by Lloyd Wright, who put great stock in creating vanishing thresholds between indoors and out. A thick growth of trees and shrubs separating property boundaries give privacy to the lawn and pool area, which is classic Old Hollywood with the pool set into the lawn.
Born in England, William Workman (1799–1876) immigrated to the United States as a young man with his older brother David. Then he went further west, to the San Gabriel Valley in 1841, then within Alta California of the Mexican Republic. For weekly email updates on residential real estate news, sign up here. Franklin Canyon is part of the Pacific Flyway and as a result the resident bird species often share company with neo-tropical migrants and other transient species, such as Canada geese. The park features a 3-acre (1.2 ha) lake, a duck pond and over five miles (8 km) of hiking trails. At one time, there was a lily pond on the property, but in 1941 while Fields was out of town, neighbor-actor Anthony Quinn’s two-year-old son drowned in it. Fields was so upset that on his return, he immediately had the pond filled in.
A primary goal for the architects was to design a green home that integrates the rhythm of the owner’s daily schedule with the spirit of the land and its micro-climate. Franklin Canyon Park is a public municipal park located near Benedict Canyon, at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, in Los Angeles, California. The park comprises 605 acres (245 ha), and is located near the geographical center of the city of Los Angeles.[1] Franklin Canyon is also the name of the canyon and surrounding neighborhood. The ponds and surrounding area are unique within the Antelope Valley and provide a recreational resource for the surrounding communities.
The area has always drawn celebrities who seek security, peace, luxury and privacy. Some of the first residents were Cecil B. DeMille, whose home was built on the highest point with stunning views, and Charlie Chaplain. Angelina Jolie bought the Cecil B. DeMille Mansion in 2017 for $24.5 million.
Though he didn’t own the house, not believing in home ownership, Fields rented the home in 1940 and added a pool table, a ping-pong table and bowling lanes set up in the living room – but almost no furniture. A legendary party guy, he had three bars in the house, including a portable bar, and lived there until his death in 1946. The house won a Society of American Registered Architects’ design award. The tiled floors have radiant heat, and two secondary bedroom suites have balconies. Over 250 species of birds have been documented at the Piute Ponds Complex. In 2004 the National Audubon Society designated the Ponds as an "Important Bird Area of California." Piute Ponds is one of a few areas in the state supporting a successful White faced Ibis rookery.
The well-equipped kitchen has double ovens, sinks and dishwashers. This renovation was said to have been designed by the first trained architect in Los Angeles, Ezra F. Kysor, designer of the extant Pico House hotel, St. Vibiana's Cathedral, and the Perry House, all in Los Angeles. But there is no known documentation of Kysor's work on the building. An historic marker was placed on the site on 5 November 1976,[2] the 135th anniversary of the arrival of the Workman family to the area. HEDS designed this net-zero solar home in Faber, VA — a beautiful mountain property located between Charlottesville and Lynchburg, VA.
